freedom summer

Freedom summer was an event in 1964 that made huge impacts and a large step in the right direction. Freedom summer was a summer full of activism. They were fighting for voting rights for African Americans both whites and blacks were a part of these movements. They had many different ways to show how passionate they were about their movement. For example, the bus boycott was a large event that took place many black and white people gathered in the busses. The freedom riders would be coming down from the north and once they hit the southern states that required them to be segregated they would refuse to get into their segregated busses. This caused many issues with the bus system and made headlines so many people saw what was going on. The buses would also get bombed and caught on fire by people who did not believe in their cause. There were many large protests that would end very violently and brutally. Some of these include police brutality and the use of tear gas and other chemicals and harsh tactics. Typically the people that were protesting behaved peacefully. This is confusing to me that a group of peaceful people would be treated unfairly. I also do not understand how the police or other member that would brutally beat them just for protesting could bring themselves to do that. Not only did they do nothing wrong they were being peaceful. It would be very different if they were burning down stores, and cities and stealing like today. Whereas today I would like more force to be used I think it is unfair to the people that did their protesting the correct way, but you can not let others get away with acting in such a destructive way.
